Man is the intermediary being between what is and what is to be realised.

Man is a transitional being upon earth and hence, in the course of his evolution, he has had several successive natures which have followed an ascending curve and will continue to do so till he reaches the threshold of the supramental nature and is transformed into superman. This curve is the spiral of mental development. We tend to call "natural" any spontaneous manifestation which is not the result of a choice or a premeditated decision, that is to say, which is without the intrusion of mental action. That is why, when a man has a vital spontaneity which is not [new p. 110]very mentalised, he seems to us more "natural" in his simplicity. But it is a naturalness which is much like that of the animal and is at the very bottom of the human evolutionary scale.
